Blind school to run from single campus

THE Royal Blind School is to close one of its campuses amid falling pupil numbers.

The charity will merge all its facilities into a single campus at Canaan Lane in Edinburgh in 2014, closing the Craigmillar Park site it has operated since 1835.

It said the growing number of blind or visually-impaired children being schooled in mainstream education meant it no longer had the need for two sites in the capital.

Richard Hellewell, chief executive of Royal Blind, said: “The present facilities of the school allow us to accommodate over 120 pupils on two campuses, with more than half being at least
part residential, and this is simply too big for our future needs.

“Therefore, the school will be consolidated on a single campus at Canaan Lane.”
