Bid to see parents help children with the 3Rs

A campaign has been launched to encourage parents to help their children develop better reading, writing and counting skills.

The TV and supermarket-based advertising campaign will highlight how children can develop their abilities at home and while on family outings.

It has been launched under the Scottish government’s Read, Write, Count early numeracy and literacy campaign.

It forms part of efforts to close Scotland’s education attainment gap.

The Scottish Survey of Literacy and Numeracy (SSLN) has shown that reading and writing skills were falling among P4, P7 and S2 pupils.

The campaign has been developed in consultation with parents in Glasgow, Dundee and Fife.

Education Secretary Angela Constance said it was important learning did not stop at the school gates.

She added: “I want to make it easier for parents to be involved in their child’s learning – not only in their school education but through a range of experiences.”
