Accounts filed with Companies House show that pre-tax profits at the East Kilbride-based firm – which makes single malts including Bunnahabhain and Tobermory and blends such as Black Bottle and Scottish Leader – fell by 26 per cent to £4.9m. Turnover was flat at just over £59m and the group experienced tough conditions in “certain key territories”.

The distiller also published accounts for the first six months of this year, which showed profits had picked up. It made £3.2m for its new owner during the period.

South Africa’s Distell bought Burn Stewart in April 2013 from Trinidad and Tobago-based CL World Brands.
