Top prices at tup sale push averages up by £413

The Suffolk Society's annual Scottish area tup sale held at Stirling over the weekend saw a cracking trade, with averages up £413 on the year '“ and a top price of 20,000gns.

The top price of the day went to PDW Taylor’s Ballynacanon flock for his ET ram lamb by Ballynacanon Discovery and out of Strathisla Shadrach which was bought jointly by Stephen Sufferin, Crewelands and Grant Brothers, Craigdoo flocks.

Two sold to 16,000gns, the first coming from the Strathbogie flock of James Innes, Dunscroft, Huntly which was by Castleisle Knockout and out of a Strathbeg Stan the Man ewe, selling to Paul Delves Bridgeview and Ian and Judith Barbour, Solwaybank.

The second knocked down at this price was from John Gibb’s Cairnton flock. By Baileys Rock Solid and out of a Cairnton the Cracker ewe it sold to JD Douglas, Cairness.

Irish breeder, Andrew Wilson, Shannagh, County Donnegal made 13,000gns for a ram lamb by Birness Murray and out of a Strathisla Speed ewe, selling to James Young, Muirton and SJ Duncan, Pennon.

The show’s champion from Alfred Robinson’s Benrafton flock went to Mike Evans, Towergate. This son of Cairness Ignition made 10,000gns. The overall reserve champion, another Birness Murray-sired lamb from S and W Tait made 8,000gns, selling to J Cornish, Parkridge.

George Purves of United Auctions said that there had been a good top end to the lamb section – and the sale average was up by over £400 on the year.
