The Bordeaux producer, which sells more than 12 million bottles annually, has become official wine supplier to the world’s oldest championship – held this year in the home of golf, St Andrews.

Mouton Cadet is already official supplier to golf’s European Tour and to the Ryder Cup, and last year released a limited edition Ryder Cup Cuvée sold through upmarket retailers including Harrods.

Brand owner Baron Philippe de Rothschild’s chief executive Hugues Lechanoine, who was attending the tournament this weekend, said: “Mouton Cadet’s association with golf is a natural fit and I am delighted that our brand has been selected as the official wine supplier to the Open as we share the same values of heritage, conviviality and the pursuit of excellence.”

Michael Tate, executive director, business affairs, at tournament organiser the R&A, added: “The championship is one of the world’s great sporting events and enjoys a unique position in golf just as Mouton Cadet does as a wine producer.”

The Mouton Cadet name was established in 1930 and Baron Philippe de Rothschild’s winemakers work with some 450 partner winegrowers.
