Healthier feed is the plan with new process

A LEADING Scottish animal feed company is pioneering a new manufacturing process to produce healthier feeds for cattle and sheep.

Aberdeenshire-based Harbro’s feed mill at Birkhill in Lanarkshire is believed to be the only plant in the country incorporating what the company describes as its “rumen friendly concept” in the manufacture of feeds.

The process is already being used in the manufacture of four of Harbro’s flagship feeds and will be rolled out over the coming months.

It is also likely to be introduced at the company’s Tore Mill in Inverness.

The process produces larger particles of the main raw materials used in compound feeds, such as cereals and peas. The company says the “scratch factor” of the larger particles, when broken down in the stomach, stimulates rumen function in cattle and sheep, reduces the risk of stomach upsets and improves animal performance.
