Dairy must cast its glass abroad

The past month in the dairy industry has been dominated by the price primary producers were to be paid by processors and retailers, but yesterday a report suggested that the Scottish dairy industry should tap into valuable export markets.

The paper, prepared by Scottish Development International and Scotland Food & Drink, states that there is a growing world market for Scotland’s niche, value added and premium produce.

Citing the export success of the Irish Dairy Board, the report concludes that investment in these markets will be important but the reward will be increased producer confidence and reduced reliance on domestic retailers.

Commenting on the report, NFUS vice president Allan Bowie said it highlighted the huge potential that existed in world markets for dairy produce, but if any progress was to be made it would require all parties to buy into the possibility.
