Young farmers slash losses for 2009 and hope for a profit

The Scottish Association of Young Farmers Clubs will be reporting an operational loss of £7,734 at their forthcoming AGM in November. The accounts show a considerable improvement on the previous year where there was an operational loss of £84,000.

John Owen, national chairman said the improvement in the financial situation had been achieved without having to make any "considerable" increases in members' subscriptions or fees.

The organisation, with more than 3,000 members, had carried out reviews of all income and expenditure and had also created a strategic plan for the future.

"It is essential we do not get complacent and continue to work towards an operational profit for the current year," said Owen.

National secretary Penny Laird put the improvement in the financial situation down to careful management and to changes in the staff structure which has seen staff numbers fall from six to four.
