The firm, whose clients have included SSE and the Scotmid chain of supermarkets, said the deal will save Tesco more than 20 per cent from its water bills, equivalent to more than £800,000 per year.

UUS sales director Tony McHardy said: “Water is an important part of Tesco’s in-store operations.”

The utility company also said it is the second-largest supplier of water and waste-water services in Scotland, and the largest in England.
