Tesco unveils 200 new money jobs for Glasgow

TESCO Bank's headcount in Scotland will soar past the 2,000 mark next year after the Edinburgh-based lender yesterday unveiled 200 new jobs for Glasgow.

The posts, in the Broadway One office block at Glasgow's Atlantic Quay, will focus on the selling and servicing of mortgages, due to be introduced by next summer.

The bank already has about 550 staff at its headquarters in Edinburgh and some 450 in Glasgow. But its numbers in Glasgow will swell next year when it creates about 1,000 jobs and takes on 500 staff from Royal Bank of Scotland.

Tesco Personal Finance (TPF) was set up as a joint venture with RBS in 1997 but the supermarket giant bought out its partner in 2008 for 950 million and renamed the business Tesco Bank.

The latest jobs will be created through a partnership with outsourcing firm Vertex.

Chief executive Benny Higgins told The Scotsman: "I'm very proud that we can create these jobs in Scotland. I'm very encouraged by the quality of applicants for the posts we have advertised.

"It's also very pleasing that so many staff who have been with TPF since 1997 want to transfer."

Higgins said the bank would concentrate on introducing mortgages next year before considering its entry into the business banking market. He said servicing small and medium-sized businesses would fit in well with the bank's existing services.
