Shaun Wills was SuperGroup’s finance director from 2012, having previously worked in senior roles at Habitat and clothing business FatFace.

SuperGroup said its board became aware earlier this week that Wills was made the subject of a personal bankruptcy order on 10 February.

It said: “This is a personal matter, on which SuperGroup will not comment further, and is wholly unrelated to the financial position of the company.”

Wills, who is a qualified accountant with 22 years’ experience in the retail sector, received more than £500,000 in pay and bonuses in the last financial year. Nick Wharton, who is the former chief executive of Dunelm, will take on the finance director’s role on an interim basis.

Cantor Fitzgerald retail analyst Freddie George described the statement as bizarre and said the timing “could not be worse”.
