Stirling prototype outfit invests in metal 3D printer

A Stirling-based manufacturing business that supplies products for nine Formula 1 racing teams has made a six-figure investment in one of the largest metal 3D printers available in the UK.

CA Models, which also supplies prototypes for the aerospace, defence, oil and gas and medical device industries, said it had invested £805,000 in the German-manufactured SLM printer with funding support from Clydesdale Bank.

The investment is part of a wider growth strategy for the business, led by owner and managing director, Clark Campbell, who left school at 15 to become a professional footballer with stints at both West Bromwich Albion and St Johnstone before an injury cut his career short.

He said: “The new metal 3D printer helps us to create components in a quicker, more cost-effective and precise way than traditional machining. This sets us apart from our competitors and provides a solid platform to build future growth.

“Previously companies looking for prototypes or parts would send designs to machining firms who could take weeks to return the finished article, but with our new equipment, we can generate a physical model from its design within a day or two.”

The deal was facilitated by Clydesdale relationship manager Robert Stark, from the lender’s Stirling banking centre.
