Skye hotel visited by Kanye West wins top hospitality award

A SKYE hotel recently used by rapper Kanye West while filming in Scotland has been named the best island hotel in the country.

Skeabost House near Portree won the prize at the Scottish Hotel Awards in Edinburgh on Sunday.

West and his entourage stayed at the hotel while filming a music video for new single Waves.

Skeabost was acquired last year by Anne Gracie and Ken Gunn, who own two other hotels on the island.

Ms Gracie said: “There are many marvellous hotels throughout the islands of Scotland, so being voted the best of them is a big honour.”

Andy Murray’s Cromlix Hotel near Dunblane won best luxury hotel at the awards while Balbirnie House in Fife was named hotel of the year.

West’s Skye visit caused a stir after a local newspaper mentioned it in just a few paragraphs on page 16 with the headline: “American man visits Skye...”

Journalist Keith MacKenzie told the BBC the tongue-in-cheek article had generated quite a bit of attention and he thought it would be “a bit of a laugh” to put West “next to a story about a kayaker rescuing some sheep”.

The 13th annual Scottish Hotel Awards gala dinner took place at the Sheraton Grand Hotel in Edinburgh.

Over 400 people attended the much anticipated and event to celebrate the accomplishments of Scotland’s best hotels and hospitality

professionals.
