Sheila Dow tipped for Bank of England’s MPC

SHEILA Dow, emeritus professor at Stirling University, has been installed as favourite to be the first woman to join the Bank of England’s monetary policy committee under new governor Mark Carney, writes Terry Murden.

Following Carney’s remarks that it is “striking” that there are no women on the committee, bookmaker Paddy Power has made the former Bank economist 3/1 favourite.

Next is Janet Henry, HSBC’s chief European economist, who is 4/1, and Morgan Stanley’s UK economist Melanie Baker at 5/1.

Others include the Financial Times’ Gillian Tett at 20/1 and the BBC’s economics editor Stephanie Flanders at 25/1.

Paddy Power offers 5/2 for the next governor to be a woman.
