Scottish teenagers '˜have best attitude to saving money'

Young people in Scotland have the best attitude towards saving and financial planning, according to a survey.

A poll of 2,000 people between the age of eight and 19 found almost two thirds of Scots (63 per cent) consider themselves to be good at saving money, compared to less than half (45 per cent) in the north east of England.

Older teenagers are more likely to say they need more money to be happy, the Royal Bank of Scotland found.

The bank said more needs to be done to help young people manage their finances.

Thom Kenrick, head of community programmes at the bank, said: “Youngsters in Scotland are clearly aware of the advantages of saving money but more needs to be done to help young people learn about managing their finances.

“Being in control of your money and properly budgeting is a major part of being able to feel happy about your financial situation and that is why the MoneySense programme hopes to reach even more youngsters this year.”
