Ryanair lifts Barr

BARR Construction has won the contract to build Ryanair's second heavy maintenance facility at Prestwick Airport in Ayrshire.

Ryanair announced earlier this month that, with support from Scottish Enterprise, it was to invest 8 million in building a new hangar to service the airline's fleet of more than 200 aircraft.

The 6,600 sq metre, three-bay hangar, which will support 200 jobs, is due to open in September.

Barclay Chalmers, managing director of Barr Construction, said: "This is a significant contract for Barr and, as an Ayrshire company, we're delighted to be able to benefit from Ryanair's decision to build the second heavy maintenance hangar at Prestwick.

"The design and layout is obviously a proven formula for Ryanair and allows us to be competitive and achieve a cost effective solution for all. This contract will also enable us to continue our involvement in the ongoing upgrade of Prestwick Airport, having completed late last year the expansion and refurbishment of the departure lounge."
