King, who has held a number of senior marketing roles at GE Capital over the past seven years, is due to join the challenger bank on 4 January, reporting to chief executive Jim Brown.

“I know his insight, experience and expertise will be invaluable to the bank we are creating,” Brown said.

“He will be an integral figure in building the bank and his appointment is another important milestone towards launching Williams & Glyn next year.”

Earlier this month, RBS submitted a banking licence application to the UK regulators for the 300-branch subsidiary. The Edinburgh-based group has to sell the business as a condition of its state bailout, and in 2013 agreed a £600 million investment in the firm under a deal with a consortium of investors led by Corsair Capital and Centerbridge Partners.

King said: “I am looking forward to playing my part in building a new UK bank that will start to appear on the UK high street again from next year. It’s a huge privilege to be involved in launching a bank that has a rich and proud history dating back to the 1700s.”
