People: Biotech stars make youthful addition

With national apprenticeship week ending yesterday, Roslin-based biotech company Ingenza was keen to introduce its three apprentices.

Ross Hepplewhite and Kirsty Glendinning, both 18, and Jonathan Selfridge, 17, all joined the firm from nearby high schools.

Senior chemist Dr Fraser Brown said: "We are now at the stage where we rely on Ross, Kirsty and Jonathan to aid us in critical project work and assist us in all our departments. Whether it be chemistry, molecular biology or fermentation, the apprentices are always keen to help out."

Also coinciding with apprenticeship week, Scotland's Hospitality Industry Trust (HIT) announced the 110 recipients of its 250,000 scholarship programme.

Over the next two years, the chosen scholars will embark on training experiences around the world.

The aim of the programme is to "broaden horizons, encourage personal development and bring back best practice and new ideas to Scotland."

HIT hopes the scholars will become leaders in the industry and help Scotland compete in the international marketplace.
