The carrier, which already flies from the capital to Copenhagen, Malaga, Oslo and Stockholm, will operate one Boeing 737 flight a day to the Spanish island on Thursday and Saturdays.

Commercial director Thomas Ramdahl said: “Tenerife remains one of the most popular holiday getaways for Scottish travellers, and compliments the range of city breaks we currently offer.”

Edinburgh Airport chief executive Gordon Dewar added: “This new direct flight from Scotland’s capital to Tenerife is a massive vote of confidence for Edinburgh Airport; Norwegian Airlines share our commitment to improving connectivity and together we are offering a great new route between Scotland and Tenerife – which has been a favourite holiday destination of Scots for decades.”

Figures released earlier this month showed that Edinburgh had its busiest September on record, with a total of 1,073,541 travellers passing through the airport – an increase of 8.7 per cent on the same period last year.
