The warning comes as an estimated 10 per cent of the £1 billion orders placed on Black Friday are expected to arrive after the advertised delivery slot, with retailers and delivery firms mostly to blame.

Around 2.2 million parcels, potentially carrying Christmas presents, ordered on Friday are at risk of arriving late.

Around 7 per cent of these orders worth £75m will miss their delivery times, while 2.9 per cent of orders worth
£31m will need to be re-delivered because the customer is not in.
