Maths graduate aims to nail capital beauty market

PAINTING nails and solving equations may seem like worlds apart but Russian maths-graduate-turned-beautician Anna Brown is hoping that the sums will add up for her new studio in Edinburgh.

Brown - who studied maths, physics and psychology at university - switched to beauty following a stint in an occupational therapy department, when she learned nail art as a treatment for patients. She caught the beauty bug and embarked on a series of courses in nail art and beauty therapy.

Her "Real Beauty For You" (RBFY) studio on Frederick Street aims to attract city centre professionals as well as George Street clubbers.

Maybe someone who will need a bit of rest and relaxation is Cat MacLean, an associate with law firm MBM Commercial, who is due to swim across the Corryvreckan whirlpool between Jura and Scarba today.

MacLean, with her brother, Fergus, a doctor, is raising money for the Children's Hospice Association Scotland.
