Marine energy trio net £21m

THREE marine power developers have secured more than £21 million in grants to demonstrate how their technology can work on larger scales.

MeyGen, which is working in the Pentland Firth, and SeaGeneration Wales, which is operating off Anglesey, will share £20m from the Department of Energy & Climate Change to show how their devices can be used in large “arrays”.

Edinburgh-based Pelamis has secured a £1.4m grant from the Energy Technologies Institute, a public-private partnership, to drive down the cost of making its “sea-snake”.

Pelamis chief executive Per Hornung Pedersen, a veteran of the wind power sector, told The Scotsman that he expected the cost of marine renewable energy devices to drop much more quickly than prices did in the wind power sector.
