The move by the global retailer, which has been producing its iconic handmade rubberised coats since it was founded in Scotland in the early 20th century, comes on the back of a £1.5 million funding package from Clydesdale Bank.

The funding will help with the expansion of its manufacturing facilities in Nelson, Lancashire, and the move to a new factory in Cumbernauld, and furthers its ambitious plans for global growth, with existing retail locations and showrooms in the likes of Tokyo and Milan.

A new retail outlet on New York's Madison Avenue is set to open in February 2017 with plans under way for a showroom in Paris , and the company opened its first London store in 2011.

The firm, which manufactures and supplies designer jackets and outdoor wear to top luxury fashion outlets worldwide, grew its turnover from £1.6m in 1997 to £7.8m as of March 2016 with more than a dozen new staff recruited over the past four years.

Bill Burnett, finance manager at Mackintosh, said: “It is a very exciting time for the business as we aim to expand our global reach. Securing the funding from Clydesdale Bank has allowed the business to thrive and we aim to continue our growth over the coming years."

The funding package was facilitated by Robert Stark, relationship manager at the lender's Customer Banking Centre in Stirling.

He said: “Mackintosh is a well-established and highly-regarded brand, recognised worldwide. It’s great to see them grow into new markets. Clydesdale Bank is proud to support businesses and help them achieve their growth ambitions. We look forward to continuing our relationship with Mackintosh as they look to expand further.”
