Law firm’s recruit packs a punch

Edinburgh-based law firm Morton Fraser is packing an extra punch after taking on Olympic boxing hopeful Katherine “Atomic” Atkin.

The University of Aberdeen law graduate and three times Scottish champion is taking a year off from her continuing studies to get some work experience at Morton Fraser, while also trying to secure a place in the GB squad for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Morton Fraser chairman Linda Urquhart said: “When Katherine’s application arrived on my desk I thought immediately that she was the kind of focused and committed law graduate we would like to support.”

Meanwhile BTO solicitors has hired commercial property expert David Gibson as a partner in its Glasgow office.

The former Burness partner specialises in the renewables, regeneration and development sectors. BTO chairman Willie Young said: “We are very pleased to have David join us. His wealth of experience in the sectors in which he operates will complement that of BTO’s highly regarded real estate team.”

Property company Mapeley has appointed Ian Gladwinfield as an asset manager in its Glasgow-based acquisition and disposals team. He will provide asset management expertise on Mapeley’s Scotland, Northern Ireland and North East England assets to bolster the company’s successes in these areas over the past few years.

He has more than 22 years of property experience. Most recently, he was senior portfolio asset manager at City Site Estates.

Accountant Anna McBride is returning to her Scottish roots as senior tax manager with Grant Thornton.

With ten years’ industry experience under her belt, McBride broadened her knowledge and experience at two of the big four accountancy firms, both north and south of the Border. She also had a two-year spell at Grant Thornton’s London office.

She will now work alongside tax director Paula Fraser in Glasgow, providing tax advice.

Andrew Howie, managing partner for Grant Thornton in Scotland, said: “We are delighted to welcome Anna back.”
