HSBC’s Scotland chief John Rendall moves to take over bank’s Polish operations

John Rendall, chief executive of banking giant HSBC’s operations in Scotland, is moving to take up the equivalent post in Poland, it emerged today.

Rendall, who has been in charge of the bank’s operations north of the Border for the past three years, will continue to live and work in Scotland over the summer to “ensure a smooth transition to his successor”.

Doug Baikie, who has been with HSBC since 1999 and has led the bank’s Scottish corporate banking division for the past two years, is taking over in an interim role.

Rendall said: “I’ve enjoyed my time in Scotland immensely and have felt privileged to lead the expansion of the bank over the past three years.”

In the past year, HSBC in Scotland has reported growth of 39 per cent in the number of “Premier” personal customer accounts and a 38 per cent increase in small business lending balances, with total lending to businesses passing the £1 billion mark in February.

Baikie said: “HSBC has made great progress in the past year, recording growth across its business in Scotland, and I believe the bank has an exciting future.

“I’m very much looking forward to leading the development of the business, and am confident we’ll continue to build on this strong picture.”

Joe Garner, head of HSBC in the UK, added: “Scotland remains a growth country for HSBC and John Rendall has made a tremendous contribution since he joined the business in Scotland more than three years ago.
