Gold surges to $1,580 record

Gold surged to a record above $1,580 (£980) an ounce yesterday as the possibility of more Federal Reserve stimulus coupled with Europe's deepening debt crisis gave bullion its longest winning streak in five years.

Prices added to early gains after Fed chairman Ben Bernanke said the US central bank was ready to ease monetary policy further if the economy weakens and inflation moves lower.
