Overall, sales at John Lewis grew 4.4 per cent on a year ago during the week, with the cooler weather driving demand for clothing, while online takings were up 13.1 per cent.

Total sales at Waitrose, also owned by the John Lewis Partnership, edged up 1.1 per cent.
