GCU ready to roll with rail operator

ScotRail has teamed up with Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) for a £126,000 research project aimed at improving the reliability and efficiency of the rail network.

The deal, funded by ScotRail and the UK government, will support a two-year knowledge transfer partnership which will see a PhD student from GCU embedded within the train operator’s engineering team.

Recruitment is currently under way for a suitable candidate for the task, with the role being supervised by Babakalli Alkali, from GCU’s Institute for Sustainable Engineering and Technology.

Supported by two professors, they will work with ScotRail to review the company’s maintenance systems, further develop the techniques used to monitor the condition of passenger trains, and will help to create a cost-effective maintenance strategy.
