“Everyone already knew that retail sales were moving online,” explained managing director Tarquin de Burgh. “The pandemic has just pushed the fast-forward button, ever increasing in pace. You can’t recreate the same retail experience online that a physical shop offers, but we have done everything we can to make our online shop as user friendly as possible and full of relevant information about the wines and producers.”
New ideas
Tarquin added: “We have been amazed with the response we have had from our online shop. Our customers keep coming back and they are looking for new things to try.
“Amazingly, we have had to expand our portfolio quite dramatically to keep our offering fresh and exciting. We recently shipped a selection of superb Tuscan wines from Castello Romitorio in Italy, had to add two new Cremants from France due to demand and doubled our rose offering in the summer. It’s hugely enjoyable to be looking for new wines again especially when the feedback from customers is so good.”
de Burgh’s specially selected mixed cases are proving to be a popular choice with the monthly mixed case the star of the show. “They are a great way to explore our range, try new wines and saves a bit of time” says co-owner Will Nicolson.

Gifting has also become a large part of their offering: “Gift cards and sending bottles and cases have been popular throughout the year so we have expanded the gifting options with some fantastic wooden boxes, an improved range of magnums and all our pre mixed cases will be available in half cases,” he added.
De Burgh Wine Merchants is now a six day a week operation and delivers UK wide with a next day service available.
