Technology incubator CodeBase, which is already home to 40-odd businesses in Edinburgh, is looking to spread its wings as it scopes sites in Glasgow and Aberdeen.

News of the expansion – likely to take place some time in the new year – comes as the fast-growing incubator unveils a partnership with Edinburgh College aimed at nurturing the next generation of tech talent.

The new “CodeSpace”, situated at the college, is seen as an innovation for Scotland as it will provide a link-up with an institution outside the mainstream university sector. Is is a concept successfully employed in the United States.

Jamie Coleman, founder and chief executive of CodeBase, which is located within the city’s Argyle House, said: “Digital literacy is one of the most important enablers of a successful modern economy, so it’s crucial that we open up digital learning to as many of Scotland’s young and interested people as possible.”

He added: “There is incredible startup talent across Scotland and we’re excited about the prospects of seeing CodeBase operations in Glasgow and Aberdeen as early as 2015.”

Edinburgh College principal Mandy Exley said: “This is a very exciting project and gives students the freedom and expert backing to bring their ideas to life.

“We’re providing the tools and the links to CodeBase’s connections that will allow students’ creativity and ingenuity to thrive.

“The digital world is so important now and so embedded in our lives that it’s vital the further education sector keeps up and makes sure we’re providing these kinds of opportunities for students across the whole curriculum.”

CodeBase is reputed to be the largest tech incubator in the UK and the fastest growing in Europe.
