David Lloyd flexes muscles with £20m investment

Health and fitness operator David Lloyd Leisure has pumped nearly £20 million into its Scottish operations in a move that supports hundreds of jobs.

The firm, which made its first push north of the Border 23 years ago, said the 2016 investment total included almost £10m on a new state-of-the-art club at Rouken Glen, East Renfrewshire – due to open next month.

Other investments made this year include £4m on refurbishing its Aberdeen club, £800,000 on Dundee, £1.6m at its Edinburgh Corstorphine site, £630,000 on Edinburgh Newhaven Harbour and £750,000 at Glasgow West End.

The expenditure has helped to sustain or create more than 400 permanent jobs, plus a further 280 seasonal and self-employed posts.

The firm, which runs 94 clubs across the UK and Europe, said it had also taken on as many local staff as possible during construction and development of new sites.
