Customers ‘angered’ by Tesco bank problems

ANGRY customers of Tesco Bank continued to deluge the firm’s Glasgow-based call centre yesterday after being locked out of their accounts due to ongoing “hiccups” in the bank’s systems.

The problem for the bank, headed by Benny Higgins, follows a weekend migration of 850,000 savings and loans accounts from systems at Royal Bank of Scotland, the bank with which it had a joint venture until 2008.

Problems for the bank’s savings and loans customers emerged on Monday.

Although the Edinburgh head-quartered bank issued a statement saying it had been fixed, a spokesman last night admitted some customers were still unable to log on.

The spokesman said the bank had put on extra staff at its call centre in yesterday to deal with a high volume of complaints, adding that the “vast majority” of their customers had not been affected by the problems.

The spokesman added: “We want to apologise unreservedly to our savings customers who have experienced difficulties in accessing our online banking system in recent days.

“The problem has led to an increase in call volumes to our call centre and we have not been able to answer calls as quickly as we would normally.”
