Dumfries and Galloway could reopen tomorrow - Sturgeon

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has said she is “very hopeful” a local lockdown in Dumfries and Galloway could be eased from Tuesday if the cross-border coronavirus outbreak is under control.

Restrictions lifted elsewhere in the country where retained in parts of the region last Friday after a “cluster” of Covid-19 cases was discovered, with 12 people now confirmed to have been infected.

The First Minister said the Scottish Government believes the cluster is linked to an outbreak at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle and is “seeking some final assurances and information” the outbreak is under control.

Sturgeon: Border protesters ‘do not speak for me’

Nicola Sturgeon has condemned weekend protests which took place on the Scottish border urging English visitors to turn back.

The First Minister insisted they "do not speak for me" as she addressed the daily Coronavirus briefing today.

But Ms Sturgeon stood by her position that she could not rule out quarantine for English people travelling north amid suggestions that this had contributed to the demo.

"As a result we're as confident as we can be that this cluster is under control, however we're seeking some final assurances and information today about the situation at the Carlisle hospital, and more generally in Cumbria."

"But I'm very hopeful that, following a further review later today, we'll be able to lift the restrictions for Dumfries and Galloway tomorrow. Of course, I'll give an update on that then."
