Co-working venture opens at Edinburgh's Techcube

An Edinburgh-based entrepreneur has launched a 'co-working' facility at the city's Techcube business hub with the aim of providing flexible office space for start-ups, small firms or self-employed people.

Hugh Caldwell, who started his own Texaport IT business from Techcube in 2012, said his Codesk venture offers working space for up to 42 small businesses, giving clients dedicated workstation areas, internet access, IT and other support facilities.

While Techcube, housed within Edinburgh’s Summerhall arts and events complex on the site of the city’s former Royal Dick School of Veterinary Studies, will continue to provide hot-desking for its clients, Codesk is designed for co-working, which enables small firms to tap into a wider professional network by operating within a shared space.

Caldwell said: “Codesk offers a great working environment where individuals can operate their businesses within a community and share the experiences and expertise of other like-minded people. The space is designed to be both professional and sociable so people can focus on work but also benefit from the support and inspiration they can offer one another.

“While Codesk can be an ideal base for a wide range of business sectors, being based within Techcube enables us to provide a platform for any technology companies to gain further leverage from expertise which is currently available there. Likewise, our links with Summerhall allows any creative businesses to further benefit from collaboration with the arts community which it caters for.”

Caldwell said he was keen to roll out the Codesk concept to Glasgow and potentially other major cities across the UK.
