An annual whisky celebration in Campbeltown has been transformed into a virtual festival thanks to help from a Glasgow-based digital agency.

Social Space, part of Galactic Media Group, said it had brought nearly every element of the Glen Scotia Whisky Festival to an online audience.

The virtual festival included a sampling of unique whiskies from Glen Scotia’s dunnage warehouse with an online tasting session with master distiller Iain McAlister, with samples sent directly to people’s homes in the UK, Germany, Netherlands and Poland.

Hidden history walking tours around Campbeltown and a behind-the-scenes distillery tour were replaced with original video tours, which Social Space’s team of videographers and photographers filmed during a week in the Kintyre town prior to lockdown.

The festival also featured a virtual pub night with live music, a pub quiz and whisky tasting in collaboration with the Scottish Malt Whisky Society.

Social Space is part of the Galactic Media Group, which also includes tech firm Galactic Experience, the creator of home delivery app Connect, and CGI specialist Trace Studio.

Claire Fraser, campaign director with Social Space, said: “The Campbeltown festival is one of the most popular events in the whisky calendar, showcasing the town’s rich heritage.

“Our team spent a week in the town to create all the unique content, allowing us to design a fully digital whisky festival, bringing nearly every element to a wider audience online.

“Not only will this encourage more people to visit Scotland for future festivals in the post-Covid-19 world, the digital festival is proving so popular that it’s also here to stay.”
