Burlesque's popularity boosts sales of lingerie as racy proves a winner for women

The growing popularity of burlesque - and the film of the same name starring Christina Aguilera - has sent lingerie sales soaring.

Sales of Gossard lingerie have soared by 65 per cent in the past year thanks to a recent craze for racy Burlesque fashion and dancing.

Thousands of women have taken up the exotic dance in recent months and the craze is set to gather pace following this month's launch of the movie Burlesque starring Christina Aguilera.

Gossard managing director Tony Jarvis said: "There is most definitely a rise of interest in old-school glamour in lingerie with a modern twist, which is encapsulated in this revival.

"Suspenders have always sold well, but the recent demand from women of all ages has been phenomenal."

Gossard said its three types of suspenders account for 15 per cent of the company's sales.

Last time there was such demand for suspender belts was in 1990, when Madonna wore one with Jean Paul Gaultier's famous cone bra and corset during her Blond Ambition world tour, Jarvis added.

Burlesque has its roots in 19th century London and, by the early 20th century, had morphed into a populist blend of comedy, theatre and striptease.
