Bulgaria shrinks over last decade

BULGARIA'S population shrank by 7 per cent over the past decade, while the number of people over 65 grew. Population decline is a problem across former communist central and eastern Europe, particularly in Russia.

Bulgaria's population fell to 7.4 million from 7.9 million in 2001, a census showed.
