Briggs Marine wins two-year MoD contract

THE Ministry of Defence has awarded Briggs Marine a two-year contract, with an option for further years, to remove oil from the sunken battleship Royal Oak in Orkney’s Scapa Flow.

Brian Burke, Briggs Marine project director, said: "The contract was won through a competitive tender process and demonstrates the capability of Briggs Group to provide a turnkey project to the MoD which encompasses Environmental and Marine Services."

The oil will be removed using "hot-tapping" techniques, used to access and remove furnace oil from the bunker tanks. Briggs Marine, which won the contract through a competitive tender process, has developed in-house machinery based on hot tapping methodology, which will be used during the ongoing project.
