In brief: First-time buyers face 17–year wait

SCOTTISH first-time housebuyers are too impatient to wait more than ten years to save up for a deposit– but studies show they will need 17 to stash away enough cash to get on the property ladder.

Research from website InvestorBee has revealed that the people who are saving for a property, 27 per cent of them state that they want to buy within 12 months, and 29 per cent want to purchase property in one to two years. No one was willing to wait more than ten years, which experts said shows a large disparity between first-time buyers’ expectations and reality. According to the data, first-time buyers in Scotland earn £20,591 and save 8.9 per cent of their salary on average, taking them 17.7 years to save 20 per cent of the average house price of £163,418.

The cost of two weeks’ parking at the facility is £67.60 – more than £10 more than Glasgow, where the same service costs £57.

However, for those who do not pre-book their airport car parking, Scottish airports are generally more affordable than most other locations around the UK, at £127.40 for Edinburgh and £119 at Glasgow.

Anthony Eskinazi, the chief executive of ParkatmyHouse.com, which carried out the research, said: “On average, turning up at the airport and paying for parking – rather than pre-booking – can add as much as £230 on top of families’ Christmas holiday costs.”
