Black Friday: Glasgow to splash out as Edinburgh shuns sales

More than half of Glaswegians look forward to Black Friday and Cyber Monday bargains while Edinburgh residents are most likely to avoid the sales, a survey has found.

Research carried out for accounting giant PwC found shoppers in Glasgow are planning to spend an average of £197 in the annual consumer frenzy – up from £60 last year.

Black Friday is the day after US Thanksgiving Day, and this year falls on 25 November, with Cyber Monday following on 28 November. The PwC survey found that across the UK, 42 per cent of consumers intend to buy during the sales, spending an average of £202.

A total of 43 per cent of Scots intend to splash out on Black Friday or Cyber Monday – in Glasgow the figure is 51 per cent, but for Edinburgh it stands at 33 per cent.

Edinburgh was also found to be the city in the UK were residents were most likely to avoid the sales, with 23 per cent of those quizzed saying they had “no interest at all” in them.

Consumers were asked how much they intend to spend on average, with Scots responding £187.55; Glasgow £197.79; Edinburgh £185.96; and the UK average coming in at £202.52.

Across the UK, shoppers in Brighton expect to splash out the most at £300, while people in Bristol intend to spend the least at £121.

Madeleine Thomson, retail and consumer lead at PwC said: “Even though retailers have mixed feelings about it, our research shows Black Friday and Cyber Monday are definitely here to stay, with sales over the weekend due to grow by a predicted 38 per cent to £2.9 billion, and 57 per cent of UK consumers who are planning to shop holding off on planned purchases in anticipation of getting a better deal during the sales period.

“The report also found consumers are embracing online shopping, with 77 per cent of respondents now planning on making their purchases in the sales online, compared to just 17 per cent in store.”

The online survey, conducted by Opinium last month, interviewed 2,000 people.
