Big Faslane contract for Barr & Wray

Barr & Wray - the Glasgow-based pool, spa and pumps specialist - has secured an "important" six-figure contract with the Ministry of Defence.

The firm, which was founded in the late 1950s and has some 85 staff, will design, supply and install salt water cooling systems, fire fighting pumps and associated control units at the Faslane naval base.

The equipment will primarily be used when Royal Navy submarines are in dry dock for repair and maintenance.

Barr & Wray - which in addition to its headquarters at Hillington operates offices in Aberdeen, London, Dubai and Hong Kong - said the 800,000 contract was the latest in a series it has won from the MoD.

Last year, the firm fitted a 400,000 jetty storm-water system for Faslane's new submarine berthing facility.

Alister MacDonald, managing director of Barr & Wray, said: "This is an important contract and consolidates our relationship with the MoD.

"Winning this contract maintains the momentum we generated last year and we look forward to building on the excellent set of business results we posted for 2010."

The company - founded as a distributor of pump and filter products - recently filed its full-year accounts up to 30 September, which revealed a 17.2 per cent increase in turnover to 15 million and a 45 per cent rise in profit before tax to 930,000.
