'Believe in your people' says Giuliani

Rudolph Giuliani, the former New York mayor, has called on Scotland's business leaders to "instil confidence, to believe in their own judgment and in their people" as the economy struggles to gain traction.

Delivering a keynote address last night to more than 800 guests at SCDI's International Awards ceremony in Glasgow, Giuliani talked of Scotland's role in the global economy.

"The world is facing up to a major economic crisis, and a proud nation like Scotland is no different in that respect," he said.

"In Glasgow I find a room full of leaders who are willing to listen and learn. My message is that it is up to leaders to instil confidence, to believe in their own judgment and in their people - and to take responsibility.

"Nothing builds confidence in a leader more than a willingness to take responsibility."

Lesley Sawers, chief executive of SCDI, said: "The success and excellence demonstrated by our international achievers shows that Scottish firms can compete in the global market place, even in challenging times."
