Barfly: Mugs away for marital bliss

AS THE countdown begins to the big day, no doubt we'll be seeing plenty more Royal Wedding memorabilia rushed out in time for Friday.

One of the most original items to come Barfly's way is a mug from the Leith Agency, the firm behind the Irn-Bru adverts as well as many other avant-garde marketing campaigns.

But instead of Kate and Wills' faces on the front, the Leith Agency has opted to promote the other wedding of the year - the happy union of Prince Yang Guang and Lady Tian Tian, the two Chinese giant pandas destined for Edinburgh Zoo.

"To com-memorate what will be an unforgettable occasion, the Leith Agency have produced a stunning unofficial souvenir mug featuring the Royal Couple, er, 'Peking' out from their favourite foliage, looking the very image of marital bliss," the firm said.

The bear cheek of it all.

Royal Wedding - gift that keeps on giving

ON THE subject of the Royal Wedding, Barfly couldn't help noticing the highly tenuous links being made by those looking to cash in on the big occasion.

Insurers have had a field day, linking everything from car insurance to pet insurance to the happy event. Not to be outdone, solicitors have also had a fair crack, issuing press releases about the importance of prenuptial agreements and, of course, wills.

Barfly thought there was at least one sector that would steer clear of publicity stunts - the usually straight-laced investment industry.

Not a bit of it. Fidelity has concluded, on the basis of the 1981 Royal Wedding between Charles and Diana, that now is not the time to give up on an uncertain stock market. Obviously.

Go the whole hog

FOR those who have pigged out on the big day, a little physical exertion may be in order.

Step forward Marie Curie Cancer Care, who are urging Scotland's corporate community to head for the assault course and raise money for the 'Whole Hog Challenge' taking place on Glenside Farm, Balfron, Glasgow on Saturday 21 May.

Now in its third year, the challenge sees teams and individuals test their mental and physical stamina against nature's elements. Waterfall climbs and mud scrambling are among the obstacles facing participants on the six-mile assault course.

A hog roast party should provide some culinary incentive for those completing the route. More details at: www.mariecurie.org.uk/wholehogbalfron
