Barfly: Can Charan add spice to comedy circuit?

IS THERE no end to Charan Gill's talents? Since making himself a fortune in the restaurant trade, Gill has since turned his hand to property development, book writing, TV presenting, singing and now he's going to become a stand-up comedian.

And if the title of his memoir Tikka Look At Me Now is anything to go by, punters at his comedy debut are due a few wry chuckles. Gill invited friends and contacts "to come along and support me, or should I say, make a fool of myself. I promise I will be very funny and not embarrass you." He also points out that anyone who catches him Sunday 20 March and Sunday 27 March at 1.30pm at Slumdog Bar & Kitchen in Glasgow will also get a Thali for their 15, making it good value even if he flops.

Ellen seeks scientific landfill solutions

INTREPID sportswoman Dame Ellen MacArthur is taking a break from solo sailing endeavours this week to encourage Glasgow students to take part in a competition to win an internship at B&Q, BT, Cisco, the National Grid or Renault. She will visit the Glasgow Science Centre on Tuesday to urge 16-18 year-olds to take part in Project Re-Design, in which they have to come up with solutions to cut down on the amount of rubbish sent to landfills every year. Richard Moir, chief technology officer for Cisco in Scotland, said: "This is a great opportunity to encourage innovation around sustainability. I am looking forward to the pupils applying their talents and innovative thinking to this important issue."

CAN'T get enough of that irrepressible TV duo Kirstie Allsopp and Phil Spencer? Fear not as they are set to arrive on an iPhone near you this spring. Through their new Glasgow-based production company, Raise the Roof, they are launching a new "app" in conjunction with BBC Worldwide. Jane Muirhead, a director with Raise the Roof, says the concept is currently top secret and merely hints that it will "allow Kirstie and Phil fans to harness their expertise in a new and innovative way".

The app is only the latest for Kirstie and Phil's venture - the fledgling firm has already completed two prime time series for Channel 4 and got a grant worth 238,000 so they can hire 16 people. Muirhead says: "Watch this space."
