Customers of Bank of Scotland were affected today by a glitch that left them unable to log into its online banking system.

The Edinburgh-based lender said on its Twitter feed that it was aware of “intermittent issues” that hit some customers and it was working to resolve the problem, which also appeared to strike the Halifax and Lloyds brands, all of which are owned by Lloyds Banking Group.

Online banking customers were advised to use the brands’ mobile apps while the group sought to fix the problem.

In 2014, rival Royal Bank of Scotland was fined £56 million by regulators over an IT meltdown in 2012 that saw millions of customers locked out of their accounts.

The RBS group, which includes NatWest and Ulster Bank, had already paid more than £70m in redress to UK customers as a result of the crash, which it blamed on “unacceptable weaknesses” in its systems.
