Agriculture is a leading light in emissions cuts

AGRICULTURE is continuing to play its part in reducing the amount of greenhouse gas emissions from the industry with a 1 per cent reduction achieved last year.

The latest figure which is included in the committee for climate change report presented to the Westminster Parliament this week means that GHG emissions in farming have fallen by more than 20 per cent in the past two decades.

Ceris Jones, climate change adviser with the NFU of England and Wales, said the reduction had been achieved despite added regulation to food production, which had not helped reduce greenhouse gas production.

He was pleased to see the report acknowledge the contribution that could be made to further reducing emissions through increasing the number of on-farm anaerobic digesters and he called for government support to help bring these to reality.
