217 new houses in 'enviable' greenery of Scottish eco town in the works

A brand new sustainable town in Scotland is poised for expansion as developers lodge plans for more than 200 new properties.

Blindwells is an ambitious development in East Lothian which has overall planning consent for 1,600 homes as well as proposals for education and health facilities and a string of local shops.

Several housebuilders are involved with the Blindwells project, near Tranent, including Avant Homes and Bellway.

Bellway is now seeking approval to develop plot six of the development, a 16.7 acre area near the town centre for which the firm has just concluded terms with Hargreaves Land.

This proposed face would include 152 private homes and 65 affordable homes, consisting of a mix of terraced, semi-detached and detached two, three, four and five bedroom homes.

Bellway is already involved in the Princes Gate development within the town.

Last year, Hargreaves Land lodged plans for the Blindwells town centre and hope for an East Lothian decision before the close of the year. The plans include an eco-friendly pedestrian area with shops, offices, eateries and supermarket. East Lothian is one of the fast growing areas in Scotland, and is popular with families and young professionals moving out (or priced out) of Edinburgh city centre but looking to live within commuting distance.

Gabriel Fella, development surveyor at Hargreaves Land, said: “Blindwells is evolving quickly, and we are delighted to extend our successful working relationship with Bellway.

“Blindwells is already home to hundreds of people keen to enjoy an enviable lifestyle surrounded by greenery and natural habitats that can thrive amid amenities for work, rest and play. We hope to have a decision on our proposals for new retail, leisure and commercial spaces in the coming months which would round off another very productive year for us.”

Mark Sinclair, land director, Bellway Homes Ltd (Scotland East) said: “We believe the purchase of this plot offers an excellent opportunity to expand on our success in East Lothian, with a range of family houses being offered.

“The site is well located for easy access from main roads and public transport to both Edinburgh City and a short distance to access world class golf course and award-winning beaches. One of the alluring qualities of East Lothian is the range of lifestyle options within the region that have been key to the continuing demand in the local market.”
