Writers attack Glasgow City Council’s closure plans

FIVE prestigious writers have strongly criticised plans to close three day centres for people with learning disabilities.

In an open letter, authors James Kelman, Alasdair Gray, Bernard Maclaverty, Liz Lochhead and Tom Leonard have expressed their disgust over plans to shut the facilities.

In the letter they call the plans “shocking and shameful”. They add: “This cynical disregard for the lives of one of the most disadvantaged sections of our people cannot be tolerated.”

Details of the council’s plan to consult on the closures were revealed in a report by executive director of social care services David Crawford in November.
