TOURISTS on the viewing platform of the Ptarmigan restaurant atop Cairngorm Mountain were yesterday able to look out over a snow-topped landscape to Loch Morlich, Ben Nevis and Ben Hope as winter arrived in the north-west Highlands.

Visitors to the restaurant – the highest in the UK at 1,097 metres – shivered as temperatures dipped to -2C yesterday.

John Mitchell, forecaster at the Met Office in Aberdeen, said light snow had been falling across parts of the Highlands for a few days but was not expected to last.

“There has been a bit of snow across the north-west Highlands but this is the first lying snow of the autumn for the Cairngorms. It isn’t anything unusual for this time of the year.

“A lot of mountains at Munro height have a dusting of snow but there are strong winds so it is drifting. The next few days will be dry with a lot of sunshine, so we expect the snow to melt.”
