Video: New Irn-Bru ad tackles Scots-English divide

THEY’VE tackled musicals, health jargon and Christmas classics, and now the latest Irn-Bru advert deals head-on with the relationship between Scotland and England.

The advert, entitled ‘New Fella’, features a gruff old Scotsman sitting at home reading ‘Scottish Stuff’ magazine when his daughter walks in to introduce her new boyfriend.

The boyfriend, surprisingly, is English. He has a thick estuary accent, wears an England football top, and owns a bulldog called Wembley whom he dresses in a St. George’s flag onesie.

With each new revelation of the man’s Englishness, our Scot takes a swig of Irn-Bru and is able to smile through gritted teeth, even when the dog passes gas on his beloved Saltire rug.

Irn-Bru advertising campaigns have long been famed for their humour and controversial approach. In 2000 an Irn-Bru advert sparked outrage by depicting pensioners ram-raiding a shop in mobility scooters, and in 2004 an advert for the drink which featured a transsexual woman playing the piano was censured by Ofcom after complaints from transgender groups.
